Our Grade 1 inquirers dived head first into the unit on ‘Who We Are’ centered around the idea that lifestyles depend on people’s choices. Their inquiry was guided on the lines of habits and daily routines, importance of a well-balanced diet and how it contributes to our health, and consequences of choices affecting our well-being.


The students brought in a lot of pre-existing knowledge and shared knowledge bytes amongst peers seamlessly, despite the given online set-up. However, the key trigger for the group was the Guest Speaker series highlighting different aspects of the routine and hygiene. It is said that an outsider in the class, i.e., a guest speaker can energize a class, inspire them, support unit themes, add value by sharing practical knowledge, and offer a new perspective. It takes teaching beyond the text to the next level by putting the IB pedagogy in conversation with the real world. This helped enhance the learners' overall educational experience. 


First of our Guest Speakers was the school nurse, Ms. Emilia Being a familiar face from school, she was able to connect instantly with the students and share insights into personal well being and hygiene and trigger curiosity and discussions around the same. Further, Ms. Miloni Sancheti, a registered dietician and educator, specialised as a Bariatric nutritionist with ten years of experience in the field and having authored many publications conducted a session on the benefits of eating healthy food and nutritional value of the different food groups.

Following these sessions, we had Ophthalmologist Dr. Deepak Garg meet our students. He spoke about healthy screen habits and about eye and vision care. Common questions about blue light filter glasses were addressed and students were enlightened about managing screen time with eye exercises. Mr.  Parikshit Sadh has been teaching & learning Capoeira (an Afro-Brazilian martial art) for over a decade. He was invited for a discussion on maintaining physical fitness and best practices related to the same. 


The contribution of teachers and parents in bringing the best of speakers to share their experience added great value to the unit. Furthermore, it has been observed that the online platform to bring Guest Speakers has been surprisingly helpful, since this helped bridge the gap of bringing the speaker to class physically. Overall, students had an invigorating experience and learnt a lot from the sessions and have picked up habits as a part of their daily routine.
